My visitor wasn’t quite who I’d expected. â€Å"Old man,’ I said wearily. â€Å"What are you doing here?’ Abe Mazur stood before me. As always, he was a sight to behold. It was the middle of summer–hot and humid, seeing as we were right in the middle of rural Pennsylvania– but that didn’t stop him from wearing a full suit. It was a flashy one, perfectly tailored and adorned with a brilliant purple silk tie and matching scarf that just seemed like overkill. Gold jewelry flashed against the dusky hue of his skin, and he looked like he’d recently trimmed his short black beard. Abe was a Moroi, and although he wasn’t royal, he wielded enough influence to be. He also happened to be my father. â€Å"I’m your lawyer,’ he said cheerfully. â€Å"Here to give you legal counsel, of course.’ â€Å"You aren’t a lawyer,’ I reminded him. â€Å"And your last bit of advice didn’t work out so well.’ That was mean of me. Abe–despite having no legal training whatsoever–had defended me at my hearing. Obviously, since I was locked up and headed for trial, the outcome of that hadn’t been so great. I had to give him credit for stepping up to a lost cause, though considering our sketchy relationship, I still wasn’t sure why he had. My biggest theories were that he didn’t trust royals and that he felt paternal obligation. In that order. â€Å"My performance was perfect,’ he argued. â€Å"Whereas your compelling speech in which you said â€Å"if I was the murderer’ didn’t do us any favors. Putting that image in the judge’s head wasn’t the smartest thing you could have done.’ I ignored the barb and crossed my arms. â€Å"So what are you doing here? I know it’s not just a fatherly visit. You might be surprised to learn that scientists have applied the same techniques used to track how genes mutate to dating the codex.  Languages behave just extraordinarily like genes, Pagel says. It is directly analogous. We tried to document the regularities in linguistic evolution and study Homers vocabulary as a way of seeing if language evolves the way we think it does. Pagel and his team explained to  Inside Science  how the process worked: [We] used a linguistic tool called the Swadesh word list, put together in the 1940s and 1950s by American linguist Morris Swadesh. The list contains approximately 200 concepts that have words apparently in every language and every culture, Pagel says. These are usually words for body parts, colors and necessary relationships like father and mother. [Then we] looked for Swadesh words in the Iliad and found 173 of them. Then, [we} measured how they changed. [We] took the language of the Hittites, a people that existed during the time the war may have been fought, and modern Greek, and traced the changes in the words from Hittite to Homeric to modern. It is precisely how [we] measure the genetic history of humans, going back and seeing how and when genes alter over time. The other thing that researchers have determined is that a single person named Homer is unlikely to have existed.   Brian Rose, professor of classical studies and curator of the Mediterranean section at the Univ. of Pennsylvania Museum, says it is clear the Iliad is a compilation of oral tradition going back to the 13th  century B.C.   Rose contends that The Iliad is an  amalgam of lots of stories about Helen, Odysseus, Agamemnon, Ajax, and others that focused on conflicts in one particular area of northwestern Turkey. Making blunt demands, or giving feedback like â€Å"that’s wrong† is likely to turn off your audience, male or female. This is where stellar communication skills come in handy. Use a tone that’s non-confrontational, so that the other person isn’t automatically feeling defensive and ready to mutiny. And even when you disagree, try to find some common element that you c an use as an olive branch before explaining what you want to do differently: â€Å"I see what you’re saying, and although I do agree that we need to raise revenue, I see it a little differently.†One strategy is to ask questions instead of diving in with statements. That way, you can be part of starting a dialogue instead of something that can be perceived as an â€Å"attack.† Asking clarification questions like â€Å"where do you see this going?† or â€Å"how does this impact our goals?† opens up a communication line with the other speaker, and will give you an opportunity to say what you want to express as part of the back-and-forth.4. Don’t be afraid to speak up.When I was younger, I was told things like â€Å"never disagree with your boss in public.† And now that I’ve been around longer, I think that’s true- to an extent. I’d modify it to, â€Å"if you disagree, do it respectfully- and pick your moments.† One of the biggest challenges facing many professional women (especially younger ones) is the idea that they should hang back and let more senior people hash things out. And while I don’t recommend inserting yourself into every single debate in every single meeting just for the sake of being heard, remember that you’re in the room for a reason. If you disagree with something being discussed, don’t be afraid to say so- but again, always phrase it as respectfully and diplomatically as possible.And again, pick your moment. If your boss is giving a presentation in front of bigwigs, and you see that she’s wrong about something, don’t throw her under the bus in front of everyone, or give a loud and long dissent in the meeting. If you’re directly asked about your opinion, give it carefully. Or talk about it offline with your boss later. Your opinion is valuable, and your insights can earn you respect and acknowledgment if they’re expressed well.5. Don’t let people talk over you.We’ve all been there: you’re talking about something work-related, and a colleague (often older and male) breaks in and, in a dismissive tone, gives an opinion about why you’re wrong, without letting you finish the thought.
